Equine Protozoal Myeloencephalitis (EPM): Spread through their droppings, this parasite can infect horses and cause severe neurological damage.
Leptospirosis: A bacterial infection that can spread to humans and pets through water contaminated with opossum urine. Symptoms range from mild fever to serious liver or kidney damage.
Salmonella: Possums rummaging through trash and leaving behind bacteria that can cause food poisoning in humans and animals.
Tularemia: Rare, this bacterial disease can infect humans and animals through bites or contact with contaminated water.
Fleas, ticks, and mites: These hitchhikers love possums and can spread Lyme disease and other illnesses to you or your pets.
Tuberculosis; potential risk lurking in their waste or saliva.

They play dead when scared. (although not fooling anyone)
